The Sabah state government decides the age of marriage in Sabah is set to 18 years, however, in certain cases there are some provisions allowing exceptions for individuals wishing to marry under age.
Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said the decision was made at the state cabinet meeting last year.
“The matter is also discussed at the meetings of the heads of ministers and the menteri besar chaired by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. We (the state government) have decided we agree with the matter (marriage age is set to 18 years). federal government).
“Of course, there are exceptions there. Where there are some situations, especially in remote areas (there is a need) the underage marriage can be referred to in the Syariah Court or civil court because there are (individuals) who are 16 years of age.
“We have an ordinance at Sabah (which allows for marital immigrants),” he told reporters in Kota Kinabalu today.
He said this when asked to comment on the statement by the Chairman of the Women and Family Development Committee, Gender and Religious Influence besides Penang’s Penang Chong Eng in relation to the underage marriage.
