National Basketball Association Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal defended Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey for posting a tweet in support of Hong Kong protest that sparked an on-going rift with the league and its business partners in China.
During TNT’s pre-game show on Tuesday, O’neal said Morey was right on speaking up about the Hong Kong protests.
“one of our best values in America is free speech. We’re allowed to say what we want to say and we’re allowed to speak up on injustices, and that’s just how it goes.”
O’Neal said on TNT’s Inside the NBA program.“Whenever you see something wrong going on anywhere in the world, you should have the right to say “That’s not right” and that’s what he did,” he added.
The NBA has yet to resolve its dispute with Chinese sponsors. The controversy has caused substantial financial losses in China.
