China makes an offer to reduce ECRL costs to half

Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad was silent when a Chinese company offered a reduction in the cost of the East Coast Rail Line in order to save the project.

Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad joked with the reporters, said “Hypothetically, I don’t accept you.” when they asked him if he would take the offer into his considerations and accept the offer by the contractor yesterday, China Communications Construction Company Ltd.

On top of that, Dr. Mahathir Mohamad said that he was still waiting for the outcomes of the outstanding discussions at a press conference after the Pakatan Harapan presidential council meeting.

Dr. Mahathir Mohamad added that the ECRL project is still being discussing and negotiating, he can’t say anything about what is happening because he has to wait for the outcomes but it will declare the decision as soon as possible.

Reuters stated that the contractor had offered to reduce the costs of the project to half but Putrajaya hadn’t answered.

ECRL was first discussed by the previous government (Barisan Nasional) but the project was facing an obstruction of its high cost and apparent lack of economic benefits to the nation.
