KUCHING – 18 Luxury vehicles with total unpaid tax value of RM8.1m were conspiscated by the Custom Department in an operation in Sarawak.
The vehicles, which included several Mercedes model, a Ferrari and a Lamborgini valued at RM4.7m in total were seized by Customs and the MACC (Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission), Customs deputy director-general Datuk Azimah Abd Hamid said in the statement.
The raid was conducted at the residences of prominent figures and local businessmen in Kuching and Samarahan.
Azimah also added that owners has violated Item 13 of the Customs Duties (Exemption) Order 2017 by issuing vehicles with false permits and documentations. It also states that foreign national and Malaysian with permanent resident status or valid working permit of a foreign country may bring in one foreign-registered vehicle provided it is exported no longer the stipulated three months of the date of import.
The authorities are currently investigating on whether this involves a syndicate for smuggling vehicles.
