PUTRAJAYA – Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad on Thursday said he will step down and continously stressed that he will pass the baton to PKR president Anwar Ibrahim when the country is back on firmer ground.
He promised to step down as PM before completing his full term in office.
“I will keep my promise,” He told the reporters in a meeting with the International Chambers of Commerce.
Dr Mahathir also confirmed a meeting took place between several leaders from the opposition UMNO, PAS and Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) parties urging him to continue being Prime Minister.
“They wanted to come and see me. I saw them. I heard what they wanted to say. Well, a lot of them expressed support for me, thank you very much,” He added.
On Monday, Economic Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali welcomed the support by the PAS-UMNO bloc PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is expected to succeed Dr. Mahathir as Prime Minister in 2 to 3 years.
