The Secretariat of Pakatan Harapan ( PH) said Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof and his deputy, Nga Kor Ming, both should remain in their positions to continue ongoing parliamentary reforms.
PH said Mohamad Ariff has restored public confidence in Parliament in a statement about the government’s motion to remove both men. With the formation of the current Parliamentary Special Committees, the development of an All-Party Parliamentary Group has strengthened ties between parliamentarians and civil society, as well as numerous changes in the functioning of Parliament.
YB Tan Sri Speaker has shown that the institutional reform attempts that started after GE-14 have begun to bear fruit and will continue, “said the joint statement by PKR Secretary-General Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution, Amanah Secretary-General Datuk Dr Hatta Ramli and DAP National Secretary Anthony Loke.
Ariff reported on Sunday obtaining motions from the Perikatan Nasional Government seeking to revoke the conditions of both his and Nga. He said all resolutions had been implemented in compliance with popular practice and without discrimination in keeping with the Dewan Rakyat Standing Orders.
Ariff could substitute him with his former classmate at University Malaya and former Chairman of the Election Commission, Datuk Azhar Harun, according to sources. The PH secretariat said that Ariff and Nga were fully supported by its coalition parties, as there was no need to replace them.
They also condemn any effort to remove any of them, particularly because they have acted equally and reasonably and are expected to continue to work and there is no reason for any reform in these two roles.
