SIBU: Seven arrested for playing mahjong despite MCO

SIBU – The police have arrested several individuals for illegal gambling while the Movement Control Order is currently in effect.

Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Stanley Jonathan Ringgit the men were caught inside a car workshop playing in a game of Mahjong. The police were able to seize two mahjong sets, two wooden tables, six plastic chairs and RM505 from the arrested individuals.

While Malaysia’s compliance rate during  MCO was highly encouraging as many people are beginning to understand the importance of staying at home, there is still a lot of citizens defying the regulations set by the government.

The men caught were also caught not wearing a facemask and with close proximity with each other. Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said that they have received reports about the gambling and police were immediately sent out to arrest the gamblers on the spot. The case will be investigated under Section 7 (2) of the Common House Gambling Act and under Regulation 7 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures Within the Infected Local Areas) Regulations 2020 for not adhering to the MCO.
