‘Silat’ gets Unesco heritage status

KUALA LUMPUR – The martial arts ‘silat’ has been listed under the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity category by UNESCO this year.

This recognition was added at the 4th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Bogota, ColombiaTourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Mohamaddin Ketapi said that it is a world-class recognition for the traditional Malay martial arts form to be enlisted by Unesco as its one of Malaysia’s cultural heritage treasures.

In 2008, Kelantanese traditional dance form Mak Yong was also included by Unesco in the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity category.
