St Anne’s church vandal in Penang arrested

BUKIT MERTAJAM – The man suspected of defacing the statues at St Anne’s Church in Jalan Kulim has been arrested by the police.

Seberang Perai Tengah (SPT) district police chief ACP Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said that the suspect was later sent to the Sungai Buloh Hospital for psychiatric treatment. The 34-year-old man is believed to be suffering from mental sickness.

The motorcycle he had used in the incident was also recovered. It belonged to his brother.

The incident happened on Wednesday when a church worker informed the church security that a man has sprayed paint on several statues and the floor. The damage is estimated to be about RM200.

Police are investigating the case under Section 427 of the Penal Code for mischief. The offense carries a maximum five-year jail sentence or a fine, or both if convicted
