Death in a custody case: High Court awards RM440,200 to Dharmendran’s wife

KUALA LUMPUR – The wife of N. Dharmendra, 34, who died in police custody in 2013, has been awarded RM440,200 by the high court in damages and costs in her suit against the Royal Malaysian Police and the federal government.

High Court judge Ahmad Zaidi Ibrahim ordered all 11 defendants in the case to settle the payments.

The widow of N. Dharmendra, Marry Maria Susan, filed her suit in 2016, alleging that her husband’s death was due to the defendant failing to carry out their statutory duties in accordance with the Police Act 1967.

Dharmendra had been detained on suspicion of murder with the use of a firearm.

He was later found dead at a police contingent headquarters on May 21, 2013.
