Today, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s Youth Wing (Bersatu) maintained that Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is still the party’s legitimate leader, and called for party polls to be conducted.
In a statement today, Armada even chastised the representatives of Bersatu who had asked for Parliamentary members to be removed from the coalition who had served on the opposition bench.
It also called on party leaders to condemn the assertion made by the Registrar of Societies (Ros), that Dr. Mahathir is no longer the chairman of the party he established, alleging prejudice by Bersatu’s Secretary-General, Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin, who is the Minister of Home Affairs, and who sides with Bersatu’s President and Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
It is well known that Ros is under the Minister of Home Affairs, Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, who is also the Secretary-General of Bersatu who is not recognised by the government, and who has a interest in this matter. In this segment, the best option is to restore the control to the grassroots to determine the party’s future, through a party election. To ensure Bersatu’s consistency, the party polls must be rushed in the shortest possible period.
Dr Mahathir had rejected the latest letter from RoS yesterday, affirming his resignation as Bersatu ‘s chairman. He explained through his lawyers Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdulla that even as he had resigned, he was announced as the party chairman after winning the uncontested party election.
Dr Mahathir also challenges the elimination of Datuk Marzuki Yahya as Party Secretary-General to be replaced with Hamzah by Muhyiddin.
Haniff Khatri said the letter dated 5 May and addressed to Capt (Rtd) Muhammad Suhaimi Yahya, Bersatu ‘s working secretary, could instead be considered more from the point of view of the RoS than a binding fact.
While Haniff said that there are no provisions under the 1966 RoS ‘Societies Act requiring his client to have some comprehensive response to his letter of May 5, he nevertheless acknowledged that pursuant to Section 3A of the Act, the RoS is allowed to monitor and manage some organization registered under it in general.
Dr Mahathir is also seeking an investigation by the RoS on the invalidity of Marzuki’s sacking as Secretary-General and Hamzah ‘s appointment pursuant to Section 16(1) of the Act, since both were done without his consultation.
Earlier today, Wan Saiful Wan Jan, Supreme Councilor of Bersatu, called for the removal of party members who sat among the opposition bloc during Monday’s parliamentary session, citing a breach of the disciplinary rules of the party.
He was quoted today in a article from Malaysiakini as stressing the need for all party leaders to stick to the laws of Bersatu, arguing that sitting with the opposition bloc is an offense under the rules of the group.
Wan Saiful, who is also the chairman of the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN), said Bersatu should not tolerate the existence of a ‘elite caste’ that has openly denounced the regulations of the party, adding that this might develop into a cancer culture that will eventually mean the end of Bersatu.
This comes in reaction to the two noticeable divisions within Bersatu, which see Muhyiddin supported by a plurality of supreme council members and representatives of state parties.
