Frank Lampard’s anticipated return to Chelsea will coincide with an overhaul of the club’s coaching staff with as many of nine of Maurizio Sarri’s backroom team leaving or being given different jobs.
And there could be a promotion to the first-team coaching set-up for Joe Edwards, who is currently development squad officer and is highly rated within the club.
Edwards has worked with Jody Morris, who is set to return as Lampard’s assistant, at the Academy and also knows a number of the young players Chelsea may be forced to rely on because of their two-window transfer ban.
Sarri’s return to Italy was confirmed over the weekend, paving the way for Chelsea to make an official approach to Derby County this week.
But other than having to negotiate compensation with Derby, Chelsea must start to clear the decks for Lampard and his own backroom team with big changes expected.
While Chelsea have refused to comment on Lampard or any other possible candidates to succeed Sarri, Derby have made it clear they will expect good money for their manager and any staff that follow him.
