Dumoulin to get started on fifth phase irrespective of knee injury

Tom Dumoulin starts off the fifth phase of the Giro d’Italia aside from an injury to his left knee sustained in an accident on Tuesday, Team Sunweb claimed on Wednesday.

The Dutchman, a winner in 2017 as well as one of the favourites to win the three-week race, hit the ground in a massive pile-up around 6 km from the line in a 235-km journey from Orbetello achieved by Ecuador’s Richard Carapaz.

“He has been cleared to competition by the team’s health care personnel, however aching with his knee. He will give it his best shot and see what the event creates.”
