PETALING JAYA: All Grab users in Malaysia will have to do a one-time selfie verification to use the app from July 12.
In an announcement on Monday, it said this was part of e-hailing regulations set by the government for all e-hailing users.
Grab has promised that personal information are safely kept and that passenger’s selfie will not be shared with the drivers.
Precautions will be taken to ensure the person is not holding a photo in front of the camera to “cheat” the system.
Past news reports had indicated that this selfie rule had been implemented for all new Grab users since March this year.
This selfie facial recognition system is believed to have helped police track down two suspects believed involved in the robbery-cum-murder of a Grab driver, Mohd Hanafiee Jaffar, 27, in Tuaran, Sabah, on May 24.
The driver had picked up the ride about 4am. His body was found dumped in some bushes two days later. He had been stabbed in the chest multiple times.
