6 dead, 200 wounded in Jakarta riots

JAKARTA: Since riots escalated in the capital on Wednesday morning, Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan said six people had died by 9am.

“Six persons have passed away so far. Two at Tarakan Hospital and then at Pelni, Budi Kemulyaan, Cipto Mangunkusumo and RSAL Mintoharjo hospitals,” he stated.

“In entire, 6 people had died and 200 suffered injuries as of 9am,” he added.

In a public address, Anies mentioned he had visited Tarakan Hospital in Central Jakarta earlier in the morning to check up on the wounded protesters.

Anies called on the protesters to keep up public order and safety to avoid additional deaths and injuries.

“Please raise our voice in a peaceful as well as orderly manner. I as well urge law enforcement personnel to practice restraint to prevent any kind of undesirable disputes with the protesters,” he declared.
